Easy Ways to Stay Up to Date on Digital Marketing Trends

Whether you’ve been working in digital marketing for under a year or 10+ years, you’ve probably heard that it is important to keep up to date on trends and news. With all fields, but especially in an ever-changing field like digital marketing, this is important. For example, do you remember all the new rules and changes that has happened with SEO over the years? Knowing (or not knowing) these changes can have a dramatic influence on your business.

But the fact is, it can feel daunting to sort through all the information out there, even if you’re a digital native that loves consuming information. So, we compiled a handy list of tips to help you absorb information.

DON’T FEEL THE NEED TO CONSUME A TON OF NEW STUFF ALL THE TIME

You have a life and stuff to do that is outside of your work. Letting work and emails melt away just makes sense. Breaks are essential and provide the extra boost of refreshment that is needed to approach new or changing information. A bit of social media detoxing every so often does not hurt, either.

PICK A FEW BLOGS OR SITES TO CHECK

The Internet is filled with information and opinions, and it would be impossible for you to read everything and put it to use. In order to feel overwhelmed, it makes sense to limit when you look at. Choose a few sites that you think are the most informative and provide the best timely information. This doesn’t mean that you can’t check out other sites or click on links that you find interesting while scrolling through Twitter–you should do those things! The key is that you shouldn’t feel the responsibility to know about everything. You don’t need to constantly consume if you’d rather enjoy eating dark chocolate or some time for meditation.

THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU READ

It is one thing to read an article, and it’s another thing altogether to actually use the information in the article. So, after you read something, ask yourself, “How does this fit into where I work and its current objectives?” Perhaps you could jot down a few lines of thoughts, too, so you can remember what you’ve thought about. Put simply, reading and writing go together and can provide new insights.

Of course, sometimes you’ll come across something that doesn’t fit into what you do at work or maybe it does and you just don’t want to write about it. That’s totally okay. Really.
These are just general tips, not hard and fast rules. Approach digital marketing trends and news with an open and focused mind that’s interested in how information connects. Couple that with a good amount of self care, and you’ll be good to go to make your digital marketing business shine.
